Deep peri-prosthetic infection following total joint arthroplasty is a major complication. Although it only occurs in a small percentage of patients it results in substantial morbidity and a decline in functional outcome. The risk of infection is generally quoted as being 1%. The lowest reported rate, 0.3%, was from the British Medical Research Council 1 but, no subsequent studies have validated this figure. A rate of 2.2% was described in a review of 236 140 American patients who underwent total hip arthroplasty (THA) between 1986 and 1989. 2 The Scandinavian Arthroplasty registers have demonstrated that between 7% and 16% of THA revisions are carried out for infection. 3,4

Prevention of Periprosthetic Joint Infection
Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a calamitous complication with high morbidity and substantial cost. The reported incidence is low but it is probably underestimated due to the difficulty in diagnosis. PJI has challenged the orthopaedic community for several years and despite all the advances in this field, it is still a real concern with immense impact on patients, and the healthcare system....

Background: Periprosthetic infection is the most serious joint replacement complication, occurring in 0.8-1.9% of totalknee arthroplasties (TKAs).This review aims to define the role of preoperative aspiration culture (PAC) for diagnosis of TKA infection. Methods: A PubMed (MEDLINE) search related to TKA infection and PAC was analyzed. The main criteria for selectionwere that the articles were fo...
متن کاملPeri-prosthetic tuberculous infection of the hip in a patient with no previous history of tuberculosis.
We report a case of peri-prosthetic tuberculous infection nine years after total hip arthroplasty in a patient with no history of tuberculosis before the procedure. Further investigation revealed active pulmonary tuberculosis which was thought to have spread haematogeneously to the arthroplasty. The infection did not respond to standard antituberculous drugs. Removal of the prosthesis and inser...

Background. In Germany, rates of primary total knee arthroplasty procedures and exchange arthroplasty procedures continue to rise. Late-onset peri-prosthetic infection constitutes a serious complication whose management may be dependent upon the spectrum of micro-organisms involved. The aim of this study was to provide a retrospective analysis of the effectiveness of initial eradication measure...
متن کاملKnee Fusion or Above-The-Knee Amputation after Failed Two-Stage Reimplantation Total Knee Arthroplasty
Prosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a serious complication of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Control of infection after a failed two-stage TKA is not always possible, and the resolution of infection may require an above-knee amputation (AKA) or a the-knee (KF). The purpose of this review is to determine which treatment method (AKA or KF) yields better function and ambulatory status for patients...
